Bland is bland

Welcome to Bland...unless you're a hiker. Tonight we are staying in Bland, VA because we are out of stove fuel and rock salt for the water purifier, and the hardware store isn't open on Sundays. This is by far the least hiker friendly town we've been through; we couldn't get a hitch so we had to road walk 3.5 miles, and the motel actually charges more if you are a hiker. It sure is good to see that discrimination is still alive and well in the South...hicks. Anyway, we are making good time, and the weather has been great. We should be in Pearisburg by Wednesday and Catawba about a week after that. Andrew should be joining us soon, and we are excited to have a familiar face hiking with us. Jess and I are holding up pretty well physically, but we are glad to rest up in a real bed...even if we had to do our laundry in the bath tub. Are we complaining too much? Tomorrow we will be back on the trail and living amoung the shelter mice again. Wish us luck and never go to Bland; it lacks flavor.

Ok, so I will never go to Bland. Andrew is coming to meet you all this weekend & I'm gonna miss him!! I think (hope) he feels the same way haha. But I'm working every day except Sundays up until the end of June when I plan on meeting up with you all as well! Can't wait! Oh, and Andrew wants his trail name to be Scoo-TOR, yeah it has to have the hyphen. haha something I came up with on our late night freezing scooter ride. Didn't think he'd go for it, but you know Andrew. See you in a couple months!!

Glad to hear that you all are doing fine and well. You probably have some sick ass pictures and crazy stories and when you get back (whenever that is) we'll grab some beers.

I wish you two were a little closer to Richmond. We'd be glad to offer a couple of weary hikers a real bed, food, and shower. At the YMCA, down the block. Just kidding :) Thanks for sharing all your adventures with us! We are excited to greet you at the finish line!

If nothing else, Bland, has been added to our list of places we DON'T care to visit!

It's Mother's Day and it appears that 7/13ths of the Hancock family delegation is in Virginia. We are trying to set up an alternate Mother's Day Brunch when we are back home. It is no longer easy to get all of us together at one time, regardless of the celebration or holiday.

There is an arts festival in Olde Towne Portsmouth, this weekend. We've been walking from our apartment to visit the artist booths and pick up an interesting piece here and there. The boat has not yet been out of the slip. She's in good shape for the sailing season but the spring winds have been gale-force and a bit beyond our capacity as beginning sailors. Fortunately, the tornados have spared us; but they have left their mark(s) all around.

I hope you and Andrew can hook up without difficulty. Remember that we can be in the central-Virginia area in two or three hours if you encounter an emergency. We can bring supplies or offer a ride out.

Best wishes for your continuing progress.

I love reading your updates! I hope you guys are doing well and having great weather. As for me, I'm still pregnant, but I'll let you know if that changes! :)
